Recently an identify theft case in which a Moroccan national by the name of Fouad Mourtada opened a profile on Facebook in the Moroccan Prince Moulay Rachid’s name, has put Internet companies on heightened alert. Mourtada was sentenced to three years in prison by the Moroccan government for this breach of trust. However, using a false user name is hardly something out of the ordinary. In fact, BackgammonMasters Mexico has found that many system users have opened account names that are not the actual names of the users. Similar to the case in Morocco, these fraudulent users make accounts in the names of celebrities including Madonna, Tom Cruise and Prince William and others.

A representative of BackgammonMasters.com, the best place for online backgammon and blackjack, recently commented on the trend of using certain types of fake names online. It has become so popular recently that BackgammonMasters refers to this type of user as “Gold usernames.” People are even buying and selling “Gold usernames” such as backgammonking, pokerking, and blackjack-king in forums on the internet. For the most part, this practice has been used for fun and compared to a car owner ordering a personalized license plate, just another way to stand out above the rest.

Mourtada was released from prison after serving just 43 days of his term . It is believed that he did not have to carry out his entire sentence due to the pressure of Human Rights groups that circulated petitions to activists and concerned citizens for the prisoner’s release. According to Mourtada’s lawyer, while this practice of using false usernames is more common in European countries, this was a first for Moroccan society and clearly not something taken lightly by the authorities.

Gin Rummy Strategy

Gin Rummy is a classic skill-based card game that leaves much room for personal rummy strategy. The following tips can be seen as a list of basic guidelines that can help unravel some of the game's basic elements that incorporate the use of skill.

A single standard deck of 52 cards is used in Gin Rummy. This determines certain aspects of the game as well as dictates some guidelines you want to pay attention to.

First, since only one deck of cards is being used, in case a card you need has been discarded onto the discard pile while you cannot pick it up, note that it is not likely to show up again in this round. Therefore, you might want to reconsider your melding strategy accordingly.
In addition, a Gin Rummy round is usually over after half way through the deck, therefore, at this stage you might want to get rid of any high cards that do not match any of your melds ? to reduce your deadwood count.

When drawing cards, it is advisable that you pick up cards from the stock pile rather than the discard pile. This way your opponents will have a much harder time keeping track of the cards in your hand. Another good reason to draw cards from the stock pile is related to the hands of your opponents. Since the cards discarded onto the discard pile are cards your opponents do not need, by picking up cards from the stock pile you may be preventing them from completing melds.

Pay attention to the cards your opponent draw from the stock pile so you can avoid throwing them cards they need to complete their melds.

To reduce their deadwood count, many players choose to avoid picking up card of high value. You can use this opportunity to form melds out of these cards easily.

In a multi-round Gin Rummy game catching your opponents off guard by knocking early during a round will pay off more than waiting for Gin in the long run.

* In both ring games and tournaments, it is advisable that you knock early to avoid the risk of undercut.

In case you achieved a significant advantage over your opponents during previous rounds, it is best to avoid any further risks, and so to maintain the current score status.

When forming melds you want to go for 4 card sets rather consecutive runs, to prevent your opponents from laying off their unmatching cards at the end of the round.

When it comes to ring games, the points are not accumulated after each round is over, and so it is advisable you go for a gin rather thank knock, since this move pays more.

My friend Earl , over at The House of Poker Blues posted about poker Etiquette today.
Id have to say i agree with everything he says.

Ive noticed lately that a lot more people are talking about their cards they mucked before the hand is over.
To me that is without a doubt the biggest no no at a poker table.

I know alot of people just dont realize that discussing it before the hand is over can effect the way the hand plays out. I try to let them know its bad etiquette in a nice way but sometimes they say things like , so what? or who cares?, that attitude really gets my blood boiling.

If your not going to take the game seriously then why play?

On another note , id have to admit that im guilty of number 5 on Earls list, sometimes, especially if its a player i have notes on and have seen around enough to know they are not noobs , donkey play brings the worst out in me for sure.

Havent posted in a few days because we were moving house.
Now i remember why i said i didnt ever want to move again lol.
All things considered the move went very well. The new place is alot bigger and and nicer.

Having a pool table is a great thing, having frinds over to watch a game , have a few cold ones and play some pool is alot of fun BUT when it comes time to move the dang thing it makes you wish youd never bought one .

Hopefully ill get a chance tonight or tomorrow night to post again but i may not as there is ALOT of arranging and unpacking that still need to be done.

Youll notice i didnt waste time setting up the old pc though eh? lmao

the next 2 chords i learned were A minor and E major, you will notice that they have exactly the same fingering except that the A minor is played with all three fingers one string down from the E minor and you dont play the low E string (top string) when playing A minor.

E major

Place your middle finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret
Place your ring finger on the 4th string, 2nd fret
Place your index finger on the 3rd string, 1st fret
Strum all of the strings in quick succession

A minor

for the A minor do exactly as the E minor but move your fingers down one string.

The 1st string produces an e note. This is the thinnest string on the guitar. Sometimes called the high e. The name of the string is usually shown in lowercase to distinguish it from the low E.
The 2nd string produces a B note.
The 3rd string produces a G note.
The 4th string produces a D note.
The 5th string produces an A note.
The 6th string produces an E note. This is the thickest string on the guitar. Sometimes this string is called the low E since it produces the lowest note

Below is the G major chord. You have to play all six strings and make sure that all the notes are ringing out.

You place your second finger on the 6th string / 3rd fret. Then place your first finger on the 5th string / second fret and your third finger on the first string / 3rd fret.

When it says the 6th string, that refers to the one on the top, closest to your head when your holding the guitar, the strngs are numbered 1 through 6 starting with the bottom string (high E) and going up to the top thickest string (low E)

Like i said in my last post , i havent been playing much poker, but i have been playing alot of rummy.

Rummy is a game i grew up playing so to find an online version was very exciting to me.

I hadnt actually played for quit a few years so i was a bit rusty . But after a few games it all came right back to me.

ive decided that id like to get back into the blog thing again, been slacking off here for a long long time.

not sure what i want to blog about as i dont really play poker anymore.

Kind of lost interest a while back, might have something to do with losing my bank roll though lmao

An Open Letter

May legions of angels surround you daily.

Dear Ladies and Gents in Iraq and Afghanistan

I am going to take a certain amount of comfort in thinking that if you are reading this letter, then maybe you are in a place of relative peace and security.

My name is Margie and I live on the east coast of Canada and I am a mom and nanna. I am also just one of many many people around the world that worry and pray for you many times through the day. In fact some days it is so often I swear I can hear God say "Enough already. I heard you the first million times !" LOL

I know that you all have seen the protesters in the media but it seems the ones that get the most coverage are those that point fingers at you the troops. The ones that say you had a choice to say no and you could have refused to go to war. Please do not take their thoughts and words to heart for they do not know seem to understand how serious was your committment when you swore an oath. In fact some think that I am nuts when I tell them I am in awe of the courage each of you have shown to honour that second part of your oath where you vowed to obey the leader of your country.

There are far more protesters like myself and we do not miss an opportunity to lend our voice against these same leaders who have put you in this war. It is they who are wrong and not you the troops but it seems that we garner less media coverage.

I am in total awe of the bravery you show each day. I cannot even imagine what it is like to wake up and find oneself in the midst of such horror and violence. An enviroment where your very life and that of your comrades depends on being able to discern who is the enemy which has to be pretty tough when I see photos of kids no more than 10 or 12 holding guns; where the "norm" is kill or be killed. Indeed I pray for your physical protection but, more so I pray that your hearts and spirits can be protected when it is seared with the excruciating pain of seeing a brother in arms injured or killed. That your mind can be helped to deal with the nightmarish sites that you must witness day in and day out, especially when you have to deal with the death and maiming of the innocent citizens.

When the pain becomes too great, go deep within yourself to find that core part of your being where the love for your family, friends, and country still burns strongly; be assured that spot is still there but you have buried it for protection. Go there every chance that you can and warm yourself by that flame of love and allow your heart and spirit be washed and healed in this love and the love that God Himself sends.

I keep your family and friends in my prayers. That they too have angels to lift them up and comfort them while they await your safe return.

As always I pray that vast legions of angels are dispatched your way today and everyday. Be aware of them for they are there to protect you, and if you allow them, they will comfort you and use their wings absorb your pain and tears.

camping

well now we have our first weekend of camping under our belts for this year.

I had plans to d a ton of things while i was out there.

LMAO

Once i got there and got everything unloaded, the 1st time is the worst, soooo much to bring, i really only felt like relaxing with a cold beer.

So thats exactly what i did lol

I did manage to get the site cleaned up and a little bit of landscaping done, looks a little better but still lots i want to do.

Not sure how this site is going to work out y et, being RIGHT beside the horse shoe pits is good and bad, nice to be able to play and not even really leave my site , but on the other hand there is always people there makin noise.

We will have to give it the season and if it is to much then next summer ill ask for a different spot.

Blackjack, the game that got it's start in France as vingt et un or 21. It was not popular when first played in the US so to help the game along if a player had the ace of spades and either of the black jacks then the payout was a 10:1 bonus thus the name Blackjack.

You can be a winner in the game of blackjack by reading and learning from successful players like Edward O Thorp, Max Rubin, and Jerry L Patterson, just to name a few.
The first thing to learn is the basic strategy. There are tables available suggesting when to hit or when to stand;also when it would be advantageous to double down and to split.

Card counting gives the advantage of knowing how many aces and tens are available which helps the player decide their betting levels. Be warned that card counting is legal in the US but, casino owners have the right and will ban any player they catch counting.

Arnld Snyder along with many others have written about shuffle tracking. That is when a player follows a clump of cards at a table where more than one deck of cards is used. It takes very good vision and estimation to perfect this strategy but has the advantage of fooling casino owners who are watching players action and count.

So educate yourself and then get to the tables play blackjack and win!

Seeing as how ive been a HUGE slaker lately i really have to start pushing the forum again

We have had some new folks join in the last couple of months and im glad to say that for the most part our games are still some of the best online poker you will find anywhere.

The Leader board is doing very well, i think we average about 13 or so in this one every week, not huge but like i said before some great poker playing.

The Charity Ball, well, i guess its had its ups and down, had some problems when we had it as a rebuy/addon tourny
We were under the impression that the rebuys were going to the MAke a Wish Foundation but it turned out that it was not the case.
So we changed it to a freezout And made the buy in a little bigger, still a great deal at $4, with half going to the kids.

I know im missing some stuff but its getting kinda late so ill add whatever it is tomorrow night

Gavin Griffin Wins the EPT and Finale

Gavin Griffin acquired his ticket to the Ð10,000 buy-in EPT Grand Finale Championship by winning a seat online at PokerStars. He parlayed his satellite win into Ð1.8 million as he became the latest EPT World Champion at the Bay Casino in Monte Carlo.

Although 706 players shared a collective dream of leaving luxurious Monte Carlo as a millionaire, most of them would go home empty handed in the largest and most prestigious tournament outside of the United States. When it ended, Gavin Griffin of Chicago, IL emerged as the winner.

Griffin was the youngest player to win a WSOP bracelet; he was 22 at the time he won it in 2004. In February, he made a final table at a WSOP circuit event. Most recently, Griffin has been focusing on charity work after his girlfriend survived breast cancer. He had been promoting the two-day 39-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Gavin Griffin started the final table as the chip leader. The table also featured tough players such as Hendon Mob's Ram Vaswani and Ireland's Andy Black. When heads-up play began, Canada's Marc Karam lead 6M to 4.6M in chips. After feeling each other out for the first hour, the two played their biggest pot on the 50th hand of heads-up play. Griffin flopped trips and scooped a 3M plus pot. He appeared to have taken over the momentum as he extended his lead to 7.3M from 3.3M. The lead was brief. Eight hands later, Karam dragged a 2.5M pot as he pulled almost even.

On the 92nd and final hand of heads-up play, Gavin Griffin raised 125K pre-flop and Marc Karam re-raised to 400K. Griffin called. The flop was 4d-3c-2s. Karam bet 500K and Griffin raised to 2M. Karam moved all-in and before Griffin called he muttered, "I think you have the best hand." Karam flipped over his hand and said, "Shit! I just have a pair of fours." He tabled 7s-4s while Griffin flipped over Kd-5s for an open ended straight draw along with two overcards. Griffin had Karam covered by just 510K as the dealer counted out all their chips. After a couple of hours of meticulous heads-up play, the EPT Championships would come down to a coinflip. The turn was 3h and Karam knew he dodged a huge bullet. His hand looked a lot better and his chances of winning increased. However, Griffin still had outs and caught on one the river when the Kh spiked which sealed the victory for Griffin.

Marc Karam won Ð1,061,820 for second place, while Gavin Griffin picked up Ð1,825,010 for first place. For the second year in a row (Jeff Williams won last year), an American won the EPT Championships. "Nothing beats the prestige of winning a bracelet, but this is a special win for sure," a jovial Griffin said as he addressed the members of the foreign press.

After the winner's press conference a media rep joked, "Fitting that an online qualifier would win the PokerStars sponsored EPT Grand Finale. On the river card nonetheless."

There's an inside joke among online players who gave PokerStars the nickname "RiverStars" due to what seems like the high propensity of river suckouts and saves. And in true RiverStars fashion, the King on the river propelled Gavin Griffin to first place.

But perhaps it was karma balancing things out in life. Griffin's girlfriend Kristin was issued a bad beat a couple of years ago when she discovered she had breast cancer. All the good will and charity that Griffin put forth might have given him a cosmic edge over the rest of the players in the tournament.

Griffin won a WSOP bracelet in 2004 and although nothing in tournament poker is more impressive than winning a bracelet, he solidified himself as a bona-fide pro as he bested some of the premiere players in the world. From legends like Phil Ivey, Greg Raymer, and Phil Hellmuth to those wild and reckless Scandis like Patrik Antonius, Johnny Lodden, and William Thorsson, Griffin outlasted all of them as he gets to add the EPT Grand Finale Champion to his resume.

Frank bill would repeal ’06 Internet gaming crackdown

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) will introduce legislation today that seeks to reverse a controversial crackdown on Internet gambling, which the Republican-led Congress passed in 2006.

While passing the bill will be difficult, there is a big financial incentive for Democratic leaders to pass it.

The chairman of the Financial Services Committee is looking to raise tens of billions of dollars with his new bill, which could be used to pay for expensive tax, healthcare, or other domestic legislation Democrats want to move this year.

The introduction of the bill and its expected movement in the 110th Congress shows how much has changed in the nation’s capital since the November elections.

With Democrats in the majority, the power of social conservatives diminished and new pay-as-you-go rules, supporters of a repeal believe the time to strike is now.

Frank, a longtime critic of regulating Internet gambling, opposes the law on philosophical grounds.

“It’s a terrible idea and there are a large number of people who think it is a terrible idea,” Frank said yesterday. “I don’t know how it ends. The worst that happens is that enough anti-gambling busybodies will be less inclined to interfere in people’s lives.”

Gambling lobbying groups were more than pleased by Frank’s announcement.

“We’re incredibly excited. I’m very interested in what the final version will look like,” Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance, said. “But from what we understand, it will do the right thing for poker players and at the same time protect the public interest.”

The group, led by former Sen. Al D’Amato (R-N.Y.), was formed to overturn the gaming law.
Frank believes that the GOP is hypocritical in saying it wants to reduce government intrusion but then passes legislation that regulates certain personal freedoms.

In 2000, Frank said, “It is important that people be able to do what the Republican Party wants them to do on the Internet. If the Republican Party has no objection, then they can do it. But if the Republican Party thinks there are pictures they should not look at, or perhaps booze they should not buy, or bets they should not make, then freedom for the Internet goes away.”

Because the law significantly affects the financial services industry, Wall Street is closely monitoring the Frank bill.

Friedman Billings Ramsey, an investment firm, wrote in a strategy memo that the Frank bill could raise more than $20 billion over five years.

The bill is expected to call for the Internet gambling industry to be taxed through a structured system.

Frank’s proposal, however, could face an uphill battle in the House, which passed the stand-alone measure 317-93 last summer. A less stringent version of the bill was later folded into a port security measure that was signed by the president last fall.

One source said that leadership officials in the House are on board with Frank’s plan, though Frank said he did not seek clearance from them.

Several members of leadership voted for the House bill last July, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.). Meanwhile, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) voted no, as did Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.).
Republicans, who spent six years attempting to pass the Internet bill, are mobilizing against Frank’s effort.

“We’re going to fight it,” said Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), a leading proponent of the crackdown on Internet gambling. “I’d be surprised if the new leadership would want to bring back an issue that took six years, because of one Jack Abramoff, to resolve.”

In 2000, then GOP lobbyist Abramoff, now a convicted felon, marshaled his conservative allies in the House to defeat a bill that included a ban on Internet gambling.

The law prohibits Americans from using credit cards and checks to play on-line poker, place bets and engage in other forms of gambling.

The proposed legislation could benefit the offshore gambling sites that saw their U.S. customer base disappear when Congress stepped in last year. Hedge funds helped to drive down their stocks in anticipation of the curtailment of online gambling.

The share prices of PartyGaming LLC and 888 Holdings, two online gaming companies that are traded on the London stock exchange, have fallen more than 50 percent since last year.
The stocks have started to claw their way back in recent months, as hedge funds and other investors came to believe the government would falter at stamping out such a popular online activity. PartyGaming has seen its stock roughly double in the past three months.

Some U.S. companies also stand to gain from overturning the 2006 law, including Cryptologic, which provides software and services for internet gambling sites, said Andrew Parmentier, a senior analyst at Friedman Billings Ramsey.

Lobbyists for banks and credit card companies that would have shouldered much of the burden of enforcing the gaming crackdown, reacted favorably to Frank’s announcement.

“We’d be very pleased to see that law repealed simply because it would remove a potential burden on the financial system and especially on community bankers,” said Steve Verdier, the senior vice president for congressional affairs at the Independent Community Bankers of America.

“We also understand it will be a little bit of a road to get a repeal,” he added.

ESPN Releases 2007 WSOP Taping Schedule

Event #1, the $5,000 Mixed Hold'em tournament. This coverage is planned for two hours with the two shows running back-to-back. We are saying "tentative" with all of these air-dates because clearly the schedule is only in the planning stages and there is a lot of flexibility in both the taping and the airing plans.

A July 17th air date would likely feature Event #3 a $1500 NLHE tournament, which very likely will be the largest field other than the Main Event. This event will be covered in a single one hour program. Immediately following the Event #3 coverage will be another one hour show, this one covering either Event #4, a $1500 Pot Limit Hold'em tournament or Event #7 the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha tournament.

Next on the shooting schedule are two weeks, two hours each and two tournaments each. First, the always entertaining $1,000 NLHE with rebuys Event #8, where the professionals show us how a $1,000 buy-in event can become a $20K or even $50K event. The second tournament of this night will be Event #13, the $5,000 Pot Limit Hold'em.

The next twofer will be Event #28 is a $3,000 NLHE tournament, which will be followed by Event #30, a $2500 NLHE 6-Handed event. A close look at the schedule suggests that these will be two of the more popular events for the professionals during this stretch of the WSOP and could produce some very interesting final table confrontations.

ESPN is hedging their bets on the next show with either two hours of coverage of Event #31, the NLHE Heads Up competition or one our of Event #33 $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha w/rebuys and one hour of Heads Up or maybe something else. Heads Up, of course, often translates to good television because the players all tend to be big names and the nature of Heads Up usually leads to a lot more table talk and of course a lot more knock out hands but ESPN has the PLO event as a back-up if the new WSOP Heads Up format does not make for good television.

Also on the taping schedule is Event #50, the $10,000 World Championship Pot Limit Omaha tournament. This will be another of the star-filled events and ESPN has recognized the draw of games other than No Limit Hold'em when the field is full of recognizable faces.

Then just a bit more than a month after it ends, the $10,000 Main Event is tentatively scheduled to begin airing on August 21st. A full twelve hours over six weeks are on the early schedule, which is four hours more than last year. This should translate into even more in-depth coverage than last year with both extended broadcast hours and the anticipated smaller starting field.

You will notice that the $50,000 HORSE tournament is not on the summer schedule. This major event added last year is being properly played as both a great tournament and potentially great television. Scheduled to play out over five days late in June, the current broadcast schedule calls for the $50K HORSE tournament to be a fall special event shown over five weeks and ten hours in October.

France Thwarts World Poker Tour'

If you were planning to play the Grand Prix championship event at the Aviation Club de France on May 6th, they will still be holding it. If, however, you were hoping to make the WPT's televised final table, it looks like you are out of luck. The WPT officially announced today that they were unable to navigate France's increasingly difficult gaming regulations with enough lead time to commit to the taping. In their statement, the WPT reaffirmed its commitment to their Charter Member Casino., the Aviation Club, and hoped looked forward to resuming a WPT stop in France in the future.

France's reluctance toward televised poker is beginning to look like déjà vu all over again. Earlier this year, the European Poker Tour was forced to cancel its French Open in Deauville as a "direct result of a last minute intervention by the French authorities." The EPT and WPT have held very successful events in France in the past, but the government's actions relative to online gaming and poker have taken a decidedly negative turn since then.

It has been speculated that the EPT, sponsored by Poker Stars, and the WPT, which has its own online gaming site, ran afoul with France's restrictive online gaming laws that prohibit online gaming and advertising by any online gaming company other than their state monopolies, Francaise des Jeux and PMU. France has become more vehement in enforcing its online gaming laws. In September 2006, France arrested two executives of the online bookmaker Bwin. PartyGaming withdrew from the French market in February when news spread that French authorities were seeking an interview with 888's former chief executive. Last month, a French court fined Patrick Partouche 40,000 euros and his company, Group Partouche, 150,000 euros for violating France's laws relative to online gaming.

France has not won many friends in the poker space as of late, but it is their tiff with the European Union that most people are keeping their eye on. In a 2003 decision, now referred to as the Gambelli ruling, the ECJ affirmed that gambling was indeed a service that fell under the EU's articles to Freedom of Establishment and Freedom to Provide Services. Under the EU treaty, France must allow EU member states the same right to provide online gaming services as they allow their state owned monopolies. Following the Bwin arrests, the European Commission issued a formal letter to France, initiating infringement proceedings under Article 226 of the Treaty on European Union. But for now, there may be less poker in Paris this spring.

Although you wouldnt thind so with the snow we have had in the last few days and expect to get in the next few.

I will need to get myself a decent pair of sunglasses as i drive all day and my eyes are kind of sensitive to bright sun light.

Sleep apnea

I came a cross an article about sleep apnea and was surprised that this disease is pretty common.

I remember a friend of mine a few years ago mentioning that his wife had this disorder.

He told me that she would stop breathing in her sleep for a few seconds but that the doctor said it really wasnt anything to worry about.

But from what i read today it is actually pretty dangerous.

The risk of heart disease and stroke is higher if sleep apnea goes untreated.

I cant imagine what it would feel like to know that when your sleeping you could stop breathig for between 10 and 30 seconds up to 400 times a night.

There are machines called CPAP devices, cpap stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.
You wear a mask that adds pressure to the air you breathe and keeps your airway open.

Pretty scary to think that 18 million people in the states have this and no telling how many dont realize it and drive everyday , not knowing if they could fall asleep at any moment.

Action: Betting. If someone says “there has been action” then they are saying that there has been at least one bet in the hand. Also, the player whose turn it is to act is said to have the action. “The action is on you Paul.”

Add-on: At the end of the re-buy period in a poker tournament, there will be one final opportunity to add-on. That is to say, one final opportunity to purchase a set amount of tournament chips for a set amount of money.

All-in: When a player puts the last of his money in the pot he is said to be all-in. The all-in player is not eligible to win money in excess to what they have placed in the pot themselves. So, if Albert, Bob, and Paul start the hand with $50, $50 and $10 respectively then the most that Paul could finish with is $30 (his own $10 plus $10 from each of Albert and Bob).

Ante: A forced bet. Each player posts an ante. The combined antes make up the pot prior to the first betting round.

Bicycle: The same as a bike. A straight to the 5 (5-4-3-2-A).

Big-bet: In a fixed limit poker game, the larger of the two bets. In $10-20 hold’em the big bet is $20.

Bike: A straight to the five (5-4-3-2-A).

Blind: A forced bet. In hold’em there is usually a small-blind to the immediate left of the button and a big-blind immediately to the left of the small-blind. They generally replace an ante and define the betting for the first round of betting in hold’em. A player can make an unforced blind bet. You will frequently hear players say “I check blind” meaning that they are checking before they see the next card or cards (be it the flop, turn, 6th street or whatever).

Bluff: A bet with a hand that you do not believe is the best hand. When you bluff you are hoping that all of your opponents will fold and you will be awarded the pot since you are the sole remaining player.

Board: Either the community cards in hold’em or the up cards of a single player in 7-Stud. If a player “plays the board” in hold’em that means his poker hand consists of the five community cards and neither of his hole cards.

Broadway: A straight to the ace (A-K-Q-J-T).

Brush: The house staff person who is taking care of the seating list. He will ensure that games are filled in an orderly fashion. In small cardrooms the brush, chip runner and floorperson positions are often filled be a single person.

Button: An object on the table (usually a plastic disk) marking which player is the “dealer.“ The button acts last and is therefore the most powerful desirable seat to be in since you will have position on all of your opponents throughout the hand.

Buy-in: The minimum amount of money that one must put up as their table stake to be allowed to play. Frequently it is ten times the small bet. In a $10-20 hold’em game the buy-in will be $100. In a poker tournament it is the amount of money that you must put up to play. The main event at the World Series of Poker boasts a buy-in of $10,000.

Call: To equal the amount of the previous bet.

Cap: To put in the final bet. In a hold’em game with a maximum of three raises then the player who puts in the final raise “caps it.”

Cards speak: The best hand will be awarded the pot. You do not need to declare your hand, your cards speak. The dealer will figure out who has the best hand.

Check: To pass the action to the next player without putting any money in the pot. This option is only available where you are the first to act, or where there has not yet been a bet.

Chip runner: The house staff person who will get chips for a seated player.

Dealer: The staff member who is dealing the cards and running the game. In hold’em the player with the button might also be called the dealer.

Doorcard: In 7-Stud a players first faceup card is his doorcard.

Draw: The hand you are hoping to develop. If you have a flush draw then you do not yet have a flush, but there are more cards to come and you might still get your flush. You are “drawing” for a flush.

Fifth street: In hold’em it is the fifth and final community card (the river). In 7-stud is the fifth card (the third faceup card).

Fixed limit: A betting structure in which all bets and raises are at the fixed amount. So, in $5-$10 hold’em the first two betting rounds feature bets and raises of $5 and last two betting rounds bets and raises as $10. You cannot bet $4 or $9. Betting is “fixed.“

Flop: In hold’em there are five community cards. The first three cards are turned faceup at the same time. These three cards are the flop.

Flush: A poker hand consisting of five cards from the same suit.

Fold: To discard your hand. If you fold you have no chance of being awarded the pot.

Forced bet: A bet which must be made. In hold’em the big blind and small blind are forced bet. In 7-stud the player with the smallest door card must make a forced bet to start the action.

Full house: A poker hand consisting of a three of a kind and a pair.

Gutshot: A straight draw in which there is a specific card required to make the straight. For example, 9-8-6-5 and A-K-Q-J and both gutshots. There is one card needed for a straight, namely a seven in the first case and a ten in the second case.

Hand: A hand of poker is used to refer to the play of everything from the dealing of the cards to the awarding of the pot. In 7-std

Heads-up: A hand with only two players remaining. In many cardrooms, once a pot becomes heads-up there is no limit on raises.

Hold’em: The usual, although shortened name for “Texas hold’em.“ A form of poker in which each player makes a five card poker hand by combing his two pocket cards with five community cards in the centre of the table.

Hole cards: Your first two cards in 7-stud. It can also be your first two cards in hold’em, but generally 7-stud uses the term “hole” and hold’em uses the term “pocket.”

House: The casino or cardroom. It refers to the location and staff. The brush, chip runner, dealer and floorperson are the house staff.

Inside straight: Same as a gutshot.

Jackpot: Many cardrooms offer a bad beat jackpot. When a particular set of criterion are met then the jackpot is paid. A hold’em jackpot might have the following criterion: Aces full of jack must lose and both players must use both their hole cards.

Kicker: The card in your hand that will be used to break a tie. It is a common event in hold’em. If one player holds A-K and the other player A-J then first player will win because his king is a “bigger kicker.”

Kill: In a “kill” game when one player wins two pots in a row then the betting limit for the next hand will be increased. “The kill is on.” In a $10-20 hold’em game, if there is a “half-kill” then when one player wins two pots in a row the game will be $15-30 for the next hand. If there is a “full-kill” then the game will be $20-40 for the next hand.

Limit poker: A betting structure in which there is a strict limit on the amount you can bet. Limit poker can be played fixed limit or spread limit.

Main pot: At the beginning of a hand all players are eligible to win the main pot. If a player runs out of money and goes all-in then he will remain eligible for the main pot and the other players will be contesting the main pot and the side pot.

Muck: The pile of cards made up of the discards. If you fold, you “muck” which is too say you put your cards with the discards.

No-limit: A betting structure in which the only limit on the amount a player can bet is the amount of money he has as part of his table stake. No-limit and pot-limit are sometimes referred to as “big bet poker.”

Open: It is the first bet. If you make the first bet, you “open” the betting.

Open-end straight draw: A straight draw in which either one of two cards will complete the straight. For example, 8-7-6-5 is an open-end straight draw since either a nine or a four will make a straight.

Option: In hold’em the big blind can raise even if no other player has. He has the “option” of raising. This is the only time when a player may bet (post the big blind in this case), get called and then still put in a raise.

Over button: In some games players can take an over button. Then, if only players with over buttons remain in the pot the game switches to the agreed higher betting limit. Suppose you are in a $10-20 hold’em game. Six players have over buttons and four do not. If all four of the players without over buttons drop out, then the six remaining players will switch to $20-40 for the remainder of that hand.

Pair: Two cards of the same rank. When combined with three other non-matching cards it is the five card poker hand “one pair.”

Pocket: Your face down cards. In hold’em and 7-stud they are the first two cards dealt to you. In 7-stud it is more common to refer to your face down cards your “hole.”

Position: Your place in the order of betting. You are said to “have position” on your opponent if you act after him.

Post: To place your small blind or big blind bet in hold’em. Usually in hold’em if you are a new player in the game you will be made to post a big blind. You can wait until it is your natural turn to post the big blind or you may post it early to get in the game for the current hand.

Pot: The money that has been contributed, through betting, by all the players. The pot is awarded to the player who remains “in the pot” and has the best hand at the showdown. If only one player remains then there is no showdown and the sole remaining player is awarded the pot.

Pot-limit: A betting structure in which a bet or raise may be up to the amount of the pot. For example, if the pot is $2 then Paul can bet $2. Larry can then raise to $8 (he calls the $2 and raises the amount of the pot which is now $6). Paul could re-raise to $28 ($8 plus the $20 in the pot) and Larry could re-re-raise to $96 ($28 plus the $68 in the pot). No-limit and pot-limit are sometimes referred to as “big bet poker.”

Pot odds: That ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount of the bet you must call. If there is $100 in the pot and you must call $10 then your pot odds are 10 to 1.

Pre-Flop: In hold’em, everything that occurs prior to the flop being placed by the dealer.

Raise: To raise the bet from its current level. Raising is not an option until the betting has been opened. In a $6-12 7-stud game with a three-raise maximum you could pay $24 in a $6 betting round. Opening bet $6, one raise to $12, two raises to $18, and three raises to $24.

Rake: The money that the house takes from the game. At low limits the rake is usually taken every hand and typically as a percentage to a maximum. For example, the house might take 10 percent to a maximum of $3. If the pot get to $30 then the house will get $3, but any money that goes into the pot after that will not be “raked.”

Re-buy: When poker tournaments allow players to buy more chips after the start, those chips purchases are called re-buys. They will only be allowed for a set amount of time. A poker tournament without re-buys is called a freeze out.

Re-raise: Any raise after the first raise. Paul bets $10, Larry raises to $20, and Steven re-raises to $30.

River: The final card. In hold’em it is the fifth card on the board. In 7-stud it is the 7th card received by a player.

Royal flush: A poker hand consisting of A-K-Q-J-T all of the same suit

Runner-runner: A hand that is made by drawing two required cards one after another. In hold’em, if Paul has A-K and the flop is T-7-2 then he will get a runner-runner straight if the turn is a Q and the river is a J.

Scare card: A card which looks likely to have improved your opponent’s hand.

Showdown: Starting with the last player to open or raise, player turn their hands face up. The dealer awards the pot to the winner of the showdown which is to say, the player with the highest ranking poker hand.

Shuffle: At the start of each hand, the dealer mixes (shuffles) the order of the cards.

Spread-limit: A betting structure in which the play may choose the amount of the bet between the minimum and maximum. In spread-limit $2-10 7-Stud the opener can choose to bet as little as $2, as much as $10 or any whole dollar amount in between. Raises, however, must at least match the previous bet. If Paul opens with $5 then Larry cannot raise by $2 to $7. Larry must raise by at least $5 and as much as $10.

Starting hand: The cards you hold before the first betting round. In hold’em your starting hand is your pocket cards and in 7-stud you starting hand is your holecards plus your doorcard.

Straight: A poker hand consisting of five cards of consecutive rank. For example, 8-7-6-5-4.

Straight flush: A straight in which the cards are also from the same suit.

Table stakes: A player may only bet or call with money he has on the table at the beginning of the hand. Nor are you allowed to remove any money from the table until you quit the game entirely.

Tell: A conscious or unconscious act which provides a clue as to the nature and quality of a player’s hand.

Texas hold'em: Usually called just “hold’em.” A form of poker in which each player makes a five card poker hand by combing his two pocket cards with five community cards in the centre of the table.

Three of a Kind: A poker hand consisting of three cards of identical rank.

Two Pair: A poker hand consisting of two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. For example A-A-9-9 is two pair (often referred to by the higher pair as “aces up”).

Wheel: Same as a bike. A straight to the five (5-4-3-2-A).

Wild Card: A card which can be used as any other card to make you hand. If jack are wild then J-7-6-5-4 would be a straight to the eight (the J acts as an eight).

The other day my bud Earl made a post at the 5TH Street Forum about how Neteller was pulling out of the Canadian and Turkish markets.

When i read it i got a sick feeling in my gut. I never really understood how my friends in the States felt untill then.

Well, its tax season here in Canada, i was thinking of using one of those company's that do instant returns to do mine and save myself a heck of alot of headaches.

In the past ive hired an accountanting firm , like Easton Accounting, a couple of times and found them to be pretty good at finding things to claim that i never ever would of thought to look for.

You can deduct a lot of things the average person wouldnt think they could.

Last year was pretty straight forward so i think i may be able to do it my self this time.

Just have to go to the government ofice here in town and pick up the 5000 papers im going to have to fill out lol.

Then i will have to tear apart the house and see if i can find all the reciepts that get thrown in drawers, on my dresser and probably have to tear the van apart and see what i shoved in the glove box and othe little compartments that are great for losing things like that lol.

Poker Raid Nabs 41

A raid on a private poker club in Cary, NC has resulted in misdemeanor gambling charges against at least 41 participants. The club, called Table Image, was an after-hours location reportedly sharing a parking lot with the local New Destiny Church, though the church was not believed to have made the complaint leading to the raid.

Local and state authorities and the National Guard were all involved in the raid, which resulted in the seizure of about $20,000 from the players at the site. A handgun was also found, along with a small amount of heroin that could not be traced to any specific player.

A local TV-station report said that six poker tables were found at the site, used for a series of private tournaments that had grown too big for a normal home. The tournament's organizer, Matthew McCoy, was charged with possession for sale of alcoholic beverages without permits and unauthorized possession of liquor, in addition to the gambling charge. McCoy stated that it was normally a $40-per-player event, and that all additional monies raised went to the overhead of the site, which may have housed games several nights each week.

Unlicensed clubs putting on private, for-profit tournaments continue to be the type of venue most likely to be raided by authorities. In this instance, several neighboring businesses noticed the surge in late-night traffic to the site, which in turn led to the interest of authorities.

World Series of Poker to Hold Teleconference Regarding Concerns

Next Wednesday March 14, the World Series of Poker will be holding a teleconference as a rare opportunity to have all your questions about the 38th Annual World Series of Poker answered by officials in charge of the event.

An obvious concern voiced among many will be the noticeable absence of online poker rooms, who have helped fuel the poker craze and allowed the WSOP to more than triple in size during the past three years. This year, it is widely believed that attendance will be about a quarter of what it was in 2006.

It is believed that the teleconference for the most part will be limited to media organizations, though we encourage anyone interested to inquire below.

The media itself is not exactly thrilled over the WSOP decision to cut out all online poker ties. The European Court of Justice, the legal arm of the European Union, handed down a decision today that bolsters the rights of online poker and gambling sites to market their products and services throughout the whole of EU member nations. The decision goes against recent moves by certain member countries that have taken protectionist steps against some forms of online gaming, and is likely to set an important precedent favoring online poker in ongoing legal disputes.

The case in question was a battle between Italy and a Liverpool-based firm, Stanley Leisure Plc, that opened and operated a bookmaking shop in Italy. The three shop operators, Massimiliano Placanica, Christian Palazzese and Angelo Sorrichio Placanica, were criminally charged with not having an Italian gaming license, with the three arguing in their defense that their valid UK gaming license granted them the rights to market in Italy based on the 'freedom to provide services' clause governing open trade between member EU countries.

The EU decision has confirmed the shop operators' stance, with a key phrase in the decision rendered by an 11-judge panel reading as follows: 'The Italian criminal penalties for the collecting of bets by intermediaries acting on behalf of foreign companies are contrary [to EU rules].'

The decision also has bearing in EU countries such as France and Germany, which have attacked online gaming firms in similar ways. One of those firms, Austria's Bwin, was quoted in one report as stating that the decision was a "milestone toward the opening of the European gambling market."

While officials with several of Europe's state-run monopolies quickly issued spin statements attempting to minimize the scope of the ruling, stock prices for most major UK online gambling firms surged forward on the news. Yesterday Kosta “Gus” Sengos, who won his way into the event by playing bar league poker at a Sioux City, Iowa watering hole, outlasted 141 players to win $219,576. The top 18 players cashed and received at least $8,132.

T.J. Cloutier, Phil Gordon, and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson were some of the more popular players to play in this event. None of them cashed.

The prize pool hit $688,700. The last WSOP Circuit event, held in Tunica, attracted 377 people and generated a prize pool of about $1.8 million.

Play Small, Lose Big

Some pros look at small pairs and believe that raising is an option because it might thin the field, perhaps chasing out a middle pair or an ace-rag hand.

Others prefer to call and hope to flop a well-hidden set that wins them a lot of money. Still others just toss them away, believing they're too dangerous to get involved with, fearing set over set.

T.J. Cloutier, a legendary tournament player who was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame last year, almost never plays small pairs.

And those times when he does venture into a pot with a small pair, he rarely plays it for a raise.

"I don't like them, because what if you get called by 6-7?" said Cloutier, winner of six World Series of Poker gold bracelets.

"You're only an 11-10 favorite. Any two overcards are only an 11-10 underdog to a small pair."

But at the $25,000-buy-in World Poker Tour Championship at Las Vegas' Bellagio last April, with blinds at $25-$50, Cloutier drew pocket 5s under the gun and put in for the minimum raise of $100.

"In different positions and shorthanded, I'll play them differently," said Cloutier, who has co-written several authoritative books on poker.

"It was just $100. I was just trying to see a cheap flop.

"I knew I'd throw it away if I got raised. When you have $30,000 in chips, $100 isn't that much."

A player in middle position raised it to $600.

The player behind him made it $1,700 to go.

The action was back on Cloutier.

"I throw the two 5s away," said Cloutier, who has more than $8.5 million in lifetime tournament winnings.

The flop came 5-8-8.

"So, I would've flopped a full house," Cloutier said.

The two remaining players continued to bet at the pot. By the river, all the money got into the middle.

Fourth street came the 3 of clubs. Fifth street came the 5 of hearts.

"I would've made four 5s in this hand," Cloutier said.

And he would have lost.

The player in middle position was holding pocket 8s. His four of a kind beat his remaining opponent's pair of queens.

He also would've busted Cloutier with quads over quads.

"I got away from four of a kind for $100," Cloutier said with a laugh.

"I would've been out of the tournament."

That's one reason Cloutier stays away from playing small pairs.

Where he lives in Texas, he likes to say, a small pair is two queens.

"You can't stand a reraise with small pairs," Cloutier said. "What if you don't flop a 5? You've got nothing.

"I'll let them play their style, and I'll play what I know."

Jamie Gold agrees to settle a dispute

World Series of Poker winner, Jamie Gold, has agreed to settle a dispute with Los Angeles-based TV producer Bruce Crispin Leyser over the distribution of Gold’s $12 million prize winnings from the tournament.

Leyser claims that Gold promised to share half of the jackpot with him should he win the tournament, under the agreement that Leyser would find celebrities to advertise Bodog.com on their clothes as they played. Leyser kept a voicemail that Gold had left him on his phone, promising him half Gold’s winnings should he win. The dispute has rumbled on for the six months since Gold won the tournament.

Gold and Leyser released a joint-signed statement declaring that they both believed the matter should be settled without the need for lawsuit proceedings.

"Jamie always intended on sharing his winnings with Crispin," the statement says.

"Jamie and Crispin are happy to report they have fully settled this matter. They are pleased to be closing this chapter and look forward to continued success."

Gold, who had withdrawn half of his winnings, had the remaining $6 million frozen in his account by a September court hearing after Leyser had filed a lawsuit against Gold.

However, in agreement with the terms of the settlement, neither man is allowed to discuss the amount of money that will be paid to Leyser.

Review - Hold'em Wisdom for All Players

'I'm assuming that many of you reading this book would consider yourself a beginning or novice poker player.'

It is a bit unfortunate that Daniel Negreanu chose this to be the first line of the 10th chapter of his new book; this would seem to be information that goes in the introduction. Then again, any good poker player who checked out the table of contents would have figured out that Hold'em Wisdom for All Players is a book for beginners. That being said, it really is a uniquely written book for novice players. Daniel does not bother, yet again, with a list of opening hands and all of the other basic Hold'em information that clogs the first several chapters of many other introductory books. He repeatedly points out that "with all of the information out there today, there is no excuse for lacking fundamental poker knowledge." Daniel's intent with this work is clearly to open up the novice player to many of the intricacies of the game without overwhelming them with endless hand histories and war stories.

The book is divided into fifty chapters of about three pages each and while covering any topic is so few words is difficult, if not impossible, I believe the average beginning player will gain a lot from reading what Daniel has to offer. Certainly there are high points and low in the material offered. On the high side, just the insight into fifty different aspects of Hold'em should both warn the novice player that there is more to Hold'em than they might have thought; while at the same time giving them insight into some of the aspects of poker they can immediately begin to incorporate into their developing game.

"Playing with a Short Stack", "Playing Fast, Playing Slow", "Calling with the Worst Hand" are all concepts that might not have occurred to the beginning player but are explained clearly and concisely by Daniel in separate chapters. On the other hand, this is advertised as a "fun primer and reference guide." It is fun and it is primary but if you are going to be a reference guide then we might expect some direction on where to go or what to read next. Daniel was obviously limited by not being able to recommend books from other publishers than his own (Cardoza). I felt it would have been helpful if at the end of each chapter, there had been a resource or two for 'more information' on that particular topic.

Daniel does keep the material light enough to be understood and tosses in some interesting hands for examples and entertaining and informative chapters, like: "Heads Up with Jerry Buss" and "Setting Up a Home Poker Tournament". The chapter on "Where to Sit at the Poker Table?" should thoroughly confuse the novice player and it should - Hold'em with all of its intricacies is not an easy game. There are concepts in Hold'em there bear out the old saying: "a lifetime to master" and pointing out that which seat you take might be one of them should, I hope, impress on the beginning player that there is always much more to learn.

Perhaps the best single chapter is: "Home Run Hitters and Small Ball Players" but it comes with the following caution: "Small ball is an extremely advanced strategy and should only be used by players with a good amount of experience." Yet in just a few pages, Daniel was able to convey the essence of the two opposing strategies. This leads to the obvious question of whether Mr. Negreanu has an 'advanced players' poker book in the works. From his chapter in Super System II (Triple Draw Lowball) it is clear that Daniel can write at a variety of levels for a wide range of players. One would hope that after this interesting book of '50 Tips', he might next explore some more advanced aspects of poker in a great deal more depth.

Playboy Enters Online Poker Market With Cryptologic-Designed Site

The 'Other Games' of Poker: Pot-limit Omaha

In Europe, the most popular poker variant isn't Texas hold'em, despite the worldwide media saturation of televised no-limit hold'em events such as the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker. Europeans continue to prefer the drama and action of pot-limit Omaha (or PLO for short) and it is spread live in most casinos across the continent. Though PLO won't be winning a popularity contest over hold'em anytime soon on this side of the pond, it is game with a rapidly growing player base online, as no-limit hold'em players looking for a change of pace are turning to PLO as a second game with increasing frequency. More live PLO games are also popping up on the Las Vegas strip, including a $2-$5 game that goes of frequently at the Wynn and a nightly $60 buy-in tournament at the Paris Las Vegas. Though it has some of the highest variance of any poker form out there and is often cited as an "action game," pot-limit Omaha is a serious mental challenge as well. I once heard a player refer to it as "3-D Chess" and I couldn't agree more.

Rules

Pot-limit Omaha is dealt exactly like hold'em, except for the fact that players receive four hole cards to start with instead of two. Two and only two of those hole cards are used to combine with three and only three of the five board cards to form a player's best five card poker hand, with the best high hand taking the pot. All bets and raises are capped at the size of the current pot. Pot sizes in PLO tend to be larger than their NLHE counterparts. As most players make their bets and raises the size of the pot in PLO, the number of chips in the middle can inflate very quickly.

Basic Strategy/Starting Hands

First rule of PLO pre-flop strategy? Always make sure your four cards are working together. Omaha is a game of drawing to the nuts. In hold'em you have exactly one two-card combination your hole cards can make. In PLO, you have six. This dramatically increases the possibility that the nuts are out there, so when considering whether or not to play a starting hand, it is crucial to examine what "nut potential" it has. It is often debated whether the best starting hand in PLO is A-A-K-K double-suited or A-A-J-T double-suited. I get more butterflies when I see the latter, but both hands have the potential to (a) flop high sets that can develop into full houses (b) make the nut flush and (b) make the nut straight; all things you want to do in PLO–where hand values are much higher than in hold'em. So, be on the lookout for big pairs, big suited aces, suited/connected broadway straight cards, and suited aces with three connecting straight cards (i.e. ).

Here's the thing, though, and it's a big part of why PLO can be such an action junkie's paradise. No four-card hand is that significant a favorite over another before the flop. Even the mighty A-A-J-T double-suited is only a 2-1 favorite pre-flop over a junk hand like the 2-4-6-8 offsuit. Take two playable hands and stack them against each other and the edges are even slimmer. Take the against the and the K-Q-J-T is actually a 53% favorite over the ace high. Therefore, when it comes to pre-flop raising, well, there isn't a whole lot of it in PLO. When dealt premium hands, players should certainly raise, if only to thin the field, but otherwise it's fine to limp in with your playable hands. Whatever edge you have or do not have in the hand will develop almost entirely on the flop.

On the flop, you're looking to hit it hard, or be prepared to dump your hand. The best flops will give you both a made hand with one or two re-draws to the nuts. For example, if I'm holding the and the flop is the , I've flopped top two pair, a gutshot to the nut straight, and the nut flush draw. A monster indeed, and it's those re-draws that make it so. In Omaha, vulnerable made hands, like bottom two pair are frequently underdogs to strong drawing hands on the flop. If I have a hand like the on a flop of , the two pair has very little hope of holding up to the bigger drawing hands that will be out there.

So, play for the nuts, get ready to jam with your monster draws and get ready for the wild ride that is pot-limit Omaha

'High Stakes Poker' Better Than Ever

After two highly successful seasons on GSN (formerly the Game Show Network), people may have been wondering what could make the highly popular poker program 'High Stakes Poker' better than its first two years. Through the first three episodes of the new season (airing at 9PM ET, with repeats through the week), "High Stakes Poker" has taken their winning formula and definitely improved on it.

The basics of the show are simple: take the greatest players in the game, have them bring in their own cash (ranging from $100,000 to $1 million) and play a No Limit Texas Hold 'Em cash game over a three day span. Part of what has made "HSP3" is the cast of characters that have come to the felt to battle it out. Players such as Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein and Jennifer Harman have been involved with all three seasons of the show, but the "new" players that they have brought in each year has added some spice to the program. In the first year, it was "amateurs" (if you can call someone who can walk to the table with a minimum of $100K an amateur) Dr. Jerry Buss, Dr. Amir Nasseri and businessman Fred Chamanara who gave viewers a chance to live vicariously through them. This year, however, the newcomers are more dangerous.

The newcomers are led by the defending WSOP World Champion Jamie Gold, who brings part of the riches he took in 2006 to the tables to take on the greats of the game. Getting some long overdue respect, 2006 WSOP double bracelet winner William Chen is a welcome addition to the field. European poker gets its kudos with one of the best young players in the game, Patrik Antonius, and one of its veterans, David Benyamine, demonstrating their skills at the tables. Noted online player Brad "Yukon" Booth also steps into battle in the live arena to demonstrate the abilities that the online players have. All of these additions have helped to make "HSP3" perhaps THE poker program for most to watch.

One of the most entertaining aspects of the program has been its hosts. A. J. Benza has grown each year with the program, but the true star of the announcing team has been longtime poker aficionado Gabe Kaplan. Using his wit and personal knowledge of the players at the table, Kaplan has quietly become one of the premier analysts of poker on the air. In the third season of "HSP", though, Kaplan does something we rarely see the analysts do during a broadcast…he actually puts his money where his mouth is and steps into the fray!

During the second episode this season, Kaplan and Benza step from the booth and Gabe playfully challenges the table that if someone gives up their seat, he would get in the game. Daniel Negreanu takes up Gabe on his boast and, after borrowing $100K from Brunson (demonstrating the respect that the players have for him), Kaplan (who is a longtime competitor in the poker world) proves to be a very challenging player in his own right. He demonstrated the "heart" that the game of No Limit takes when, with pocket Kings, he actually was able to bluff Mike Matusow off of his winning hand (Mike had turned a pair of Aces, but the board held four to a straight). Negreanu ably handled the transfer to the booth as well, adding in very astute knowledge of the game and of the players sitting there. If the poker thing doesn't work out for Daniel, he would have a very good career as a poker analyst!

Two of the best battles during the first three episodes of the show have been Doyle Brunson knocking heads with Jamie Gold (over the first few episodes, Gold has repeatedly charged at the legend, only to have Brunson display the skills that make him, at the age of 73, still one of the preeminent players in the game) and Shawn Sheikhan and Mike Matusow verbally jousting with each other. There will definitely be more great face-offs over the remainder of the season, as Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Sam Farha and Phil Ivey have yet to enter into the fray.

If there is a bad point to the third season of "HSP", it would be that the players aren't rotating through as quickly as in the past couple of seasons. To the third episode, only one player has changed out (Sheikhan left and 2006 WSOP runner-up Paul Wasicka replaced him), not counting Kaplan's replacement of Negreanu. With the vast array of talent waiting in the wings, some viewers may be disappointed to only have one episode with some of their favorite players. But this is a rather nitpicky point. Overall, "High Stakes Poker" has proven why it is "schedule television" as poker fans watch the millions on the tables float between the fingers of the best players in the game. To take part in the action, be sure to tune into GSN on Mondays at 9PM ET over the next few months and learn why "High Stakes Poker" has become what it is today, one of the best poker shows on television.

EU Fires Back At U.S., Hints at Challenge to UIGEA

While the announcement of last week's pending World Trade Organization decision against the United States means little in the short term concerning online poker, statements recently made by a high-ranking European Union official suggest that the United States and the UIGEA will face growing challenges in international venues.

EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy commented on recent U.S. actions on Tuesday, accusing the U.S. of protectionist measures in violation of established treaties. "In my view," stated McCreevy, at the European Parliament in Brussels, "it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another [forum]."

McCreevy ruled out bringing forward a piece of "harmonized legislation" encompassing online gambling within the EU, recognizing that the issue remains a matter of debate within several EU member countries. Instead, McCreevy focused on the nature of the recent U.S. moves. "In order to protect, I'd say, their industry there," referring to land-based U.S. casino interests, "they have de facto prevented foreigners from online betting into the United States." McCreevy followed by classifying the UIGEA as "a protectionist measure."

McCreevy has reportedly asked his staff to raise the issue with EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, although no direct talks on the matter have occurred. McCreevy has launched legal actions against EU countries in the past over similar trade-restraint matters. However, when the topic of Antigua's pending WTO victory was brought up, McCreevy stated that a new WTO complaint was not an issue of "major momentum," due in part to the deliberate nature of the WTO process. Also in play are larger trade negotiations between U.S. and EU officials, with McCreevy suggesting that the issue could be up for discussion when he meets with the U.S. representatives in March.

Poker player gambles away his wife

Moscow - A Russian man lost his wife in a game of cards after putting her up as a stake instead of cash.

Andrei Karpov, from Murmansk, had run out of money in a game of poker and offered his opponent his wife instead of cash to stay in the game.

When Karpov lost the game and his opponent, Sergey Brodov, turned up to claim his winnings, his wife Tatiana was so angry she decided to divorce her husband and started a relationship with Brodov.

She has since married Brodov, and said she does not regret leaving her first husband.

She said: "It was humiliating and I was utterly ashamed. But as soon as my ex-husband did that I knew I had to leave him.

"Sergey was a very handsome, charming man and I am very happy with him, even if he did 'win' me in a poker game." -

John "Johnny World" Hennigan makes history winning the World Poker Tour (WPT) Main Event at the Borgata Winter Poker Open. Hennigan joins Daniel Negreanu as the only player to win a World Poker Tour title, a World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Bracelet (Hennigan has won two), and the US Poker Championship. Not only did "Johnny World" win $1.6 Million for first place, he re-established himself among today's poker elite.

A lively studio audience of family, friends, and poker enthusiasts filled the Borgata Event Center for the start of the televised WPT Final Table. Audience members barely took their seats when John James was the first player eliminated winning $276,935 for sixth place. The next player to exit the Final Table was Michael Sukonic of Warminster, PA, winning $332,322 for fifth place. The level of play and intensity rose dramatically with four players left. Joseph Simmons, a Philadelphia native and former manager of the Grammy award-winning hip-hop group, The Roots, won $387,709 in fourth place.

Professional poker player and WSOP Bracelet Winner, John Gale, slid down the leader board before finally being eliminated from the tournament. The British-born player won $443,096 for his third place finish. Following the money presentation ceremony, the 2007 Borgata Winter Poker Open featured a heads-up match between a premier professional and an amateur tournament player. As play resumed, Hennigan was the favorite to beat Charles Kelley of Stanton, VA. Kelley, a retired stockbroker, made several runs for the chip lead, but in the end, it was "Johnny World's" night.

Hennigan grew up in Philadelphia and Atlantic City. He started playing pool as a young man, and eventually moved to the professional ranks. "Johnny World," who got his start playing poker with friends in the neighborhood, began playing professionally in Atlantic City. The likes of Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu have commented that "Johnny World" is one of the best cash game players on the planet. Aside from his reputation in the cash games, Hennigan gained attention at the Final Table of the first-ever World Poker Tour televised event, where he finished fourth.

After experiencing significant success as a poker player, "Johnny World" went through a period outside the spotlight, opting to take some time away from the game to reprioritize and refresh. Last night displayed the end result of Hennigan's perseverance.

After the presentation at the end of the tournament, Hennigan finally seemed to relax. "I've played a lot of poker tournaments; they're exciting and brutal," commented a smiling Hennigan. "I'm completely in shock right now. I've won a few tournaments in the past, and it usually doesn't sink in for the first couple hours. I'm just soaking it in. Two hours from now it will really hit me."
